The curtains were raised on the latest Ubuntu long-term support release, called XenialXerus(Ubuntu 16.04) last month. Being an LTS release, it will receive security updates and bug fixes for the next five years. This release brings several key changes for both desktop and server users, however the user experience hasn’t changed a lot from version 14.04, the last LTS release.

The Major Changes Include:

1. The Ubuntu Software Center had Gone for good

The Ubuntu Software Center has not found favor among users because it has become slower with time. Now, it has been replaced by GNOME software, which is a package manager coming straight from the GNOME project. This facilitates Canonical to focus on other work instead of maintaining its own centralized app store.

2. Option to always show Application Menus

As of now, menus in Ubuntu appear only when the user hovers the mouse over the top menu. Now, this is set to change as the option to make the menus always visible is available under System Settings.
The option to always show the application menu also solves the discover-ability issue of Ubuntu’s Default Settings, which many first-time users face.

3. The Launcher can be moved to the Bottom of the screen

In Ubuntu 16.04, the launcher dock can be moved to the bottom of the screen without installing any third-party software. However, this option is not found in System Settings.
The user needs to open a terminal and type
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcherlaucher-position Bottom
To revert to the old settings, a new command needs to be given
gsettings set com.canonical.Unity.Launcherlaucher-position Left
Alternatively, the Unity Tweak Tool can be used for the same.

4. Dashboard no longer includes Amazon Searches by default

Amazon search results were displayed by default in the Unity Dashboard since version 12.10 was released. This was criticized due to privacy issues. So, in version 16.04, Amazon searches are no longer enabled by default.
However, in case the user wants Amazon search results, they can be re-enabled from
System Settings > Security & Privacy > Search

5. Ships with ZFS

Described by Canonical as the “combination of a volume manager and a filesystem”, ZFS is like BTRFS, both being copy-on-write filesystems allowing users to create snapshots of the machine and manage multiple storage devices . However, ZFS is preferred because it is more commonly used in the production environment. Ubuntu 16.04 is the first major distribution to ship with ZFS.

6. A New Way to Distribute Apps

‘Snap’ packages are a new way of distributing apps. These help developers to ensure that their apps are future-proof and will work as they should after several years. Another point to be noted is that Snaps run in isolation from the rest of the desktop, analogous to the permission-based system in mobile devices.
However, Ubuntu 16.04 is not an LTS for some users, as Ubuntu 16.10 “Yakkety Yak” is expected in the next six months. But if you are not one of those users, this version will be your companion for the next 5 years at least.
